The River Bure above Oxnead bridge, below Burgh-next-Aylsham, Norfolk

An upper reach of the River Bure, between Oxnead and Burgh-next-Aylsham, Norfolk. In the 19th century, this stretch was part of the commercial waterway network of the Norfolk Broads. Wherries, the "black sailed traders" of the Broads, traveled to the market town of Aylsham upstream although only the smallest wherries could make the trip and had to negotiate two locks in order to reach the town. These days, only canoes navigate this upper section.
