Meantime the third great use for the accum-ulated resources of the banks of Boston was fastdeveloping. The new requirement afforded apermanent and normal outlet for a vast aggregateof capital. Industrial Expansion A grave situation had been developing inXew England. By its activity in constructingrailways to the prairies and the Pacific coast,Boston had materially hastened the collapse, fora time at least, of Xew England agriculture by thecompetition of the more fertile western , however, Xew England turned tomanufacturing, and with justice demanded theassistance
