But iron has not supeiseded stone in its decorative function. Themajority of these metallic skeletons are faced by walls, which bearthe traditional ornament. The latest French railway stations andthe most recent exhibition buildings, those of 1900. in the Champs-Elysees are market-halls, masked by classic fagades.
