Acrowd of demon-worshippers had gathered roundto witness the scene—evidently expecting someevil would happen to him. The man knelt downand prayed, then rose and began to chop. Whenhe was about half way through the tree, he fellfrom exhaustion. The demon devotees set up ashout, and, running to a pagoda, asked a Brahmanpriest what they should do. The priest gavethem sacred ashes, and told them quickly to smearhim with the ashes, and make him say he was quite. STEADFASTNESS OF HINDU CHRISTIANS. T05 defeated by the demon.
