Born in Montreal, in 1*788, John Fisher, when a lad, wassent first to the country to learn farming. But he earlyshowed a predilection for business, and he was put by hisstep-father, Mr. Ferguson, into the warehouse of HectorRussel & Co., in which he remained for some years. Heafterwards formed a partnership with his brother Daniel,under the style Daniel and John Fisher, groceries anddry-goods merchants. On 2^th October, 1821, he was mar-ried, by Eev. Dr. Harkness, to Miss Hunter, daughter ofFrancis Hunter, merchant of Quebec, who was afterwardsan elder in St. G-abriel Street Church.
