Friedrich Jahn (1778-1852). 1885 engraving of the German gymnastics educator and nationalist Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. Jahn was the initiator of the German gymnastics movement and promoted the use of parallel bars, rings and high bar in international competition. His admirers knew him as Turnvater Jahn, roughly meaning 'father of gymnastics' Jahn.
