Thisholy man was the person whom, when aninfant, Christ took into his arms, andshowed to his disciples, as one that wouldbe a pattern of humility and received the gospel afterward from St. \John the Evangelist, and was exceedinglyzealous in his mission. He boldly vindi-cated the faith of Christ before the emperor,for which, being cast into prison, he wastormented in a most cruel manner ; for afterbeing dreadfully scourged, he was com-pelled to hold fire in his hands, and at thesame time, papers dipped in oil were putto his sides, and set on light.
