Business has been the best this sum- mer that it has been in many years, the social whirl having been more general and continuous, with a great number of large functions. In consequence of the increased demand, and the fact that the prevalence of so much rainy weather has spoiled outdoor blooms, there has been a shortage. Gladioli and dahlias have had an exceptionally good season. Of the latter the cactus varieties are popular for table decorations, with the peony varieties leading for vase pur- poses. Horticultural Society* Final plans for the fall exhibition of the Newport Horticultural Society, which is to be held at Newport Beach this week, were made at the meeting of the society August 29. Arrangements for the annual ball of the society, which occurs on the closing night of the ex- hibition, were also made. C. N. Bugholt, gardener for Miss Fannie Foster, exhibited a new pink gladiolus, which was awarded the so- ciety's certificate of merit. The new flower has been named Mrs. F. P. "Web- ber, in honor of the wife of the secre- tary of the society. William F. Smith, gardener for Mrs. George S. Scott, exhibited a freak ear of corn, consisting of a regular ear with nine small ears growing around the base of it. Various Notes. One of the big functions last week was the opening of the Casino ballroom for the first dance since 1908. The stage front was decorated with a charm- ing arrangement of ferns hanging over the footlights and white hydrangeas and other plants and blooms. The stage was set as a forest scene. A. T. Bun- yard did the work. Frederick C. Bergmann, head clerk at A. T. Bunyard's, who was operated on for appendicitis last w
