Hannibal Barca (247 – between 183 and 181 BCE) was a general and statesman from Ancient Carthage, Tunis on the North African coast who is widely considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. His father, Hamilcar Barca, was a leading Carthaginian commander during the First Punic War (264–241 BC). When Hannibal’s father, the great Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, was preparing his expedition to Iberia, nine year old Hannibal asked to be allowed to accompany him. Hamilcar, the story goes, made his son swear that he would forever be an enemy of Rome.
