Going down the steps to the right, we are brought face toface with one of the old landmarks of this country, the oldstone officers quarters, built in 1780, with walls from twoand a half to eight feet thick; formerly the windows hadiron bars across them. In 1812 the basement of this build-ing and the old block-houses were used as prisons, in whichCaptain Roberts detained the men and larger boys of thevillage, after the capture of the Fort, until he decided whatto do with them. Those who took the oath of allegianceto Great Britain were released and allowed to return totheir homes; the others were sent to Detroit. Mr. Michael 78 ANNALS OF FOKT Stone Officers Quarters, Built 1780. RAMBLE THROUGH FORT MACKINAC. 79 Donsinan was permitted to remain neutral and was not dis-turbed. In 1814, the basement of this building and the block-houses were used as a place of refuge for the women andchildren of the village, while the vessels containing theAmerican troops were anchored off the island. The old wooden building on our right, now used as astorehouse, was built for a hospital in 1828 on the site ofthe original hospital, built by the British. The long, low wooden building at the other end of thestone-quarters, formerly officers quarters, is now used as astorehouse; facing it are the barracks, a two-story frame-building, built in 1859, occupied by two companies ofsoldiers, one on each floor, with mess-rooms, etc., completefor each. We come next to the guard-house, built in 1828. Turningtoward the barracks, we have on our riglit, first, the Com-missary, built in 1877, on the site of the old stone-magazine.
