No yard is complete without one or more beautiful flowering shrubs. Irregular groups or masses of shrubs arranged against buildings, fences or property lines are much more effective than single specimens. A good arrangement of shrubs provides wide open spaces near the center of the lawn. Amelanchier Amelanchier botryapiiun (Dwarf Juneberry). A. ATilgaris (Serviceberry). Ornamental, black, sweet fruit. Amorpha Amorpha fmti- cosa (False Indi- go). Flowers dark bluish purple in July. Valuable for massing on rocky slopes. Amygdalus - Almond A vigorous, beautiful shrub covered in May with fine blossoms. Amygdalus rosea flore pleno (Pink Flower- ing Almond). A. alba plena (White Flowering Almond). Aralia Aralia peiitaphylla. A pretty medium sized shrub. Holds leaves until late in Fall. Valu- able for screen planting. Flowers inconspicu- ous. A. spinosa (Hercules Club). A large shrub with stout prickly stems and compound leaves, flowers creamy white in huge panicles some- times 2 feet long, followed by dark purple berries, giving a tropical appearance to land- scape planting.
