Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9/Jupiter collision. Infrared image of Jupiter showing many impact sites ('splashes') due to fragments of Comet Shoemaker- Levy 9 in July 1994. The collision sites form a diagonal line just above the planet's south polar region. Impact Q1 ( GMT, 20 July) is on the limb at lower right. Just to the left of this is Impact R ( GMT, 21 July). Other impact sites are not identified. The Great Red Spot is the red patch on the limb near lower left just below the equator. The large bright spot at top right is Io, one of Jupiter's moons. This image was made at GMT on 21 July at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), Hawaii.
