The pole-lathe is a primitive form of lathe operating on the reciprocating principle and is powered by means of a foot pedal or treadle. Up to the mid-nineteenth century it was widely used for the manufacture of mop and broom handles, brush stocks, chair legs, textile bobbins,hollow ware and all manner of turned objects for use, manufacturing and the home.
