FARMHOUSE, WELFORD-ON-AVON, GLOUCESTER Welford-on-Avon, Shakespeares Avon, boasts of many goodcottages with thatched roofs and dormer windows. It has a finechurch and a grand old lych-gate, and there a may-pole stands,the successor of a very ancient one, around which the villagersdanced in the days of Queen Bess. Looking down upon the one-storeyed cottages stands a good farmhouse, shown in the illustration,of half-timbered construction, tiled roof, and graceful gables ; anddignity is given to the house by the noble brick chimney, consistingof twin shafts, octagonal in plan, crowned by a neatly formed is spring-time, and a glorious wealth of blossom adorns the fruit-trees and gives a promise of a bountiful fruit harvest.
