Samuel Wilberforce. Caricature of Samuel Wilber- force (1805-73), Bishop of Oxford and one of the British opponents of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Wilberforce was trained in public speaking and acquired the name 'Soapy Sam'. His opponents said it was because he used a 'well lubricated set of words, a sentence so oily and saponaceous that no-one can grasp it'. Wilberforce and his supporters claimed that it was because of the fact that 'though often in hot water [trouble], he always comes out with clean hands'. Wilberforce is mainly remembered for arguing against Huxley in a debate on evolution at a meeting of the British Association in 1860.
