Tafilet; the narrative of a journey of exploration in the Atlas mountains and the oases of the north-west Sahara . have brought himsome little present from Europe next time I visitedthe Court; and with this touch of humour weburied the hatchet and supped together, talkingover the great changes that had come to pass sincethen, and ever and anon referring to the turnsof fortune that the Moors look upon as predestin-ation. The great men of that day were dead orin prison, while I had returned to health, — andall in the short space of some six ! How are the mighty fallen !I recovered more quickly than I had fallen ill,and in a day or two, under Kaid Macleans care, was able to leave my bed and sit in one of hiseasy-chairs and watch the ever-changing scene thatpresented itself to me in the heart of the Sultanscamp. No one who has not seen the great mahalla ofMorocco on the march and pitched can form anyidea of the strange mixture of boundless con-fusion and perfect order that succeed each other insuch quick succession. A few words as to how theSultan travelled and how he lived cannot but prove.
