The Maharajah Dhuleep Singh

The Maharajah Dhuleep Singh (Maharaja Dalip Singh, Duleep Singh) born, Lahore, 1838 died Paris, 1893 was the last Maharaja of the Sikh rulers of the Punjab. He was the youngest son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and came to the throne because all of his rivals were killed in fighting each other for the kingdom. He was deposed and exiled to Fategarh in India at the age of eleven, when the Punjab was annexed by the British in 1849. In 1854 he was exiled to Britain. Most of his jewels, including the Koh-I-Noor diamond were passed on to Queen Victoria who befriended the young exile. He was brought up as an English gentleman and after many different homes within Britain he eventually settled in a country estate at Elveden near Thetford. He married twice and had a number of children but was prevented from returning to India and died in Paris.
