Opposite the dock, and at right-angles to it, several lines ofrailway tracks are laid. In the arrangement at Ashtabula, six double lines of tracks are laid, which are spared aboutthe same as the hatches of the vessels commonly served. Inoperation, the vessel is placed so that the hatches are oppositethe track-, or nearly so3 and the machine is moved opposite thehatch into which it is desired to load; a steel cable is hooked into* See page 1 7. 182 COAL-SHIPMENT AND THE LAYING-OUT OF STAITHE O COAL-SIIIPMEXT AND THE LAYIXG-OUT OF STAITHE HEADS. 183 the drawhead of the ear, and the car pulled up to the upper orshorter end of the bridge, which is so constructed as to form abumper against which the end of the car rests when tilted. Thebridge is then tilted; at the same time the end-board of the caris automatically withdrawn, and the coal flows out through a dis-charging shoot, and is concentrated in a telescopic trough orspout, which may, if desired, be lowered to within a few feet ofthe bottom of the vessel. After the load is discharged, thebridge is tilted back, the cable is detached, and the car isallowed to run down and off the incline on to the track pro-vided for empties. Another loaded car is then taken up, andso the operation continues, the machine moving from one set oftracks to another and from one hatch to another, as may berequired, by supplies of loaded cars, or to permit of the trimmingof the cargo. The machine can be moved laterally in eitherdir
