The dawnof the eighteenth did not bring a renewal ofthe fight. General Lee removed his forcesthrough Winchester to Fredericksburg,where he wintered. A small portion of theUnion Army followed him, but the maincommand under Burnside proceeded toWeverton, one and one-half miles belowHarpers Ferry, crossed the river and re-crossed it at Berlin, one and one-half milesfurther down, and then marched to LEO KOSSIEUR, I 0MMAND1 i; IN i Mill. Throughout the warit was the scene of much uncertainty, as itwas the center of operations of both Bolivar Heights, above the town, nearlyall of the ground covered by the operationsof both armies at Antietam, is in full the northeast lies South Mountain wherethe battles had been fought prior to An-tietam, and where McClellan pressed Leeso severely that he fell back through Boons-boro and Keedysville, seven and one-halfmiles to Antietam, fighting all the way. At South Mountain Ex-President Hayeswas wounded, and President McKinley wonhis first promotion. General Reno whocommanded the advance corps, was killed inthe fight. From Bolivar Heights also is seen thestretch of country General Lee traversedwith his army on his march to Gettysburgin June of 1863. At
