Macfarlanes account of his parentage,however, is very confused, and it may be pointed out thattliere was a George Leslie, Captain of Blair, in 1549, whena precept of sasine was directed to him for the infeftmentof James Bannatyne in certain lands in Perthsliire. Sig., 1 A\ LESLIE, EARL OF LEVEN 373 George Leslie could not have been the person of that namewho held the same offices iu 1612, and who was undoubtedlyAlexander Leslies father, as the latter had a legitimatedaughter, Margaret, who was married for the first time in1643, and again after the death of her first husband in 1647,and to whom her half-brother, the Earl of Leven, gave atocher of 13,000 merks. But the two Georges may havebeen father and son. Who the mother of Alexander Leslie was is not says, he was gotten in Mr. Leonard Lesslyshouse at Coupar, when he was Ooininendator of Cupar, andalso that he was born there. His mother is styled awench in Rannoch by a contemporary diarist. It is saidthat his father, after the death of his wife, married theEarls mother in order to legitimise him, but this state-ment
