Goddard's first liquid-fuel rocket design. 1926 design by US rocket scientist Robert Hutchings Goddard (1882-1945) for his liquid oxygen-gasoline rocket. Launched on 16 March 1926 at Auburn, Massachusetts, it climbed 12 metres during its flight. This was the first rocket propelled by liquid fuel. Over the following years, Goddard's designs resulted in progressively larger and more powerful rockets. Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime, Goddard is now hailed as a father of modern astronautics. During his career he explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion. His achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age.
