GENETIC ENGINEERING


DNA has two long chains composed of altered molecules of phosphoric acid and deoxyribose linked to four nucleic acids : adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. The two chains are twisted together forming an helix. DNA molecules are the components of chromosomes. Genes correspond to different fragments of DNA carrying hereditary information. Gene can be manipulated to study their development and functional mechanisms. Gene engineering can be used to diagnosis hereditary diseases or for therapeutic purposes (gene therapy).
