City documents Municipal register, mayor's address, annual reports, etc . < P 14 PARK DEPARTMENT SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT New Bedford, Mass.,December 1, 1922. Honorable Board of Park Commissioners,New Bedford, Mass. Gentlemen:—- I hand you herewith my report as Superintendent ofParks for the year ending November 30, 1922. We have the past year been able to introduce a more ad-vantageous system of work in the department by the chang-ing of the men from the different parks as the work re-quired. The foremen of the different parks have worked in har-mony throughout the year and better results have been attain-ed through their co-operation. NEW WORK. The new section of Buttonwood Park lying south ofKempton Stret was cleared and put in readiness for furtherimprovement. We hope the coming season to employ the ser-vices of a landscape architect to further improve this newplot. At Hazelwood Park the grove south of the BowlingGreen has been cleared with practically no expense throughthe assistance given us by the Street Si/-; JJ P16 PARK DEPARTMENT By the addition of our new tennis courts the pastyear beheve we have met the satisfaction of the players. The rose garden at the Common was completed and didexceptionally well for the first year. The work upon thisgarden and results obtained reflect much credit upon the De-partmental gardener, Mr. John Hennessey. This garden wasinstalled at the suggestion of Mayor Remington. Primaril}there was some opposition to it as it eliminated the childrensslide, but it now meets the approval of most everyone, as wehave made a new slide for the children which is even betterthan the original one. I would suggest that with the first money available a newiron cage should be erected at Buttonwood Park coveringthat part of the canal bounded on the north by Court Streetand on the south by the deer yard. This would enable us totake care of various kinds of birds and wild-fowl. Respectfully submitted, E. B. SHERMAN, Gen. Supt. of Park
