Should the young plants be troubled with insects, a sprinkling of slug shot will be beneficial. For fall and winter use the early kinds should be sown, from the middle of July to the middle of August, and the Rutabagas from the middle of June to the first of July, using from one to one and a half pounds of seed to the acre. Improved Fnrple or Red Top Globe Turnip This excellent table variety is globular in shape, of good size and very attractive appearance. The roots are large, purple or dark red above ground, white below. The flesh is white, fine grained and tender. The roots when in best condition for the table are about three Inches in diameter, but can be grown much larger foi stock feeding. This sort keeps well for so earlv a variety, and is one of the best for market use. It is also known as Red Top 'White Globe. Bed or Fnrple Top Plat Strap-Iieaved Tnndp A very early, strap-leaved variety, very extensively used for the table. The leaves are few, entirely upright in growth. The roots are flat, of medium size, purple or dark red above ground, white below. The flesh is white, fine grained and tender. Roots when in best condition for table use are about two and one-half inches in diameter, but can be grown much larger for stock feeding.
