'Illustration from Sister Anne's Probation, c1850-1890, (1923). Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was a British social theorist and Whig writer, often cited as the first female sociologist. Martineau wrote many books and a multitude of essays most controversially from a feminine perspective; she also translated various works from Auguste earned enough to be supported entirely by her writing, a rare feat for a woman in the Victorian era. From British Book Illustration - Yesterday and To-day edited by Geoffrey Holme. [The Studio, Ltd., London, 1923]
