New Fire House Anasazi cliff dwelling, Mesa Verde, Colorado: view NE from SW loop of Ruins Road on Chapin Mesa. Sandstone-block structures on two levels in a south-facing alcove in the sandstone canyon wall. Rock-cut hand-and-toeholds between the two levels (L of centre) were used in conjunction with retractable ladders. Rooms on upper levels were generally used for storing crops. Most cliff houses at Mesa Verde were built in the mid 1200s AD.
