Reconstruction of a Pole-erecting Machine for building use, from a drawing by Leonardo Da Vinci, 1500 from the Codex Madrid I, folio 43 r. The Pole-erecting Machine allowed curved wooden poles to be installed perfectly erect when they could then be driven deep into the ground using another tool the Pile Driver, used for fixing posts into river basins or banks. The Pole-erecting Machine consists of a double tie-rod winch that tensions the poles where they curve, so that they slowly straighten.
