Beggars Bridge over the river Esk, Esk Valley Yorkshire UK

Thomas Ferris, a young man from Egton was courting the daughter of the local squire - Agnes Richardson. But Thomas was poor and not allowed to marry Agnes so he decided to seek his fortune at sea. The night before he set sail he was due to meet Agnes but was unable to see her and say goodbye as the river Esk was in a high flood. He made his fortune at sea and on his return became the Mayor of Hull City and married Agnes. In 1619 he paid for the building of Beggars Bridge so that no one else would be separated by the waters from their loved ones.
