The London, Edinburgh and Dublin philosophical magazine and journal of science . as practicable and, secondly, as firmly held as possible from anyslip. These two ends have been arrived at as follows :—Thesphere Q is made hollow in order to be light, and it movesbetween six wheels; of these, four wheels, DEFG (fig. 1), are* Communicated by the Author. L2 148 Modifications of a Form of Spherical Integrator. fixed upon a frame, while two others K L, held in a frameSMNV (fig. 2) rocking about points at S Y, keep the sphere Fig. in compression ; the frame is so moved, by means of a slot Rattached to the spring rod of the dynamometer, that the lineP M, and therefore the circle on the sphere rolling upon thecylinder D, is proportional to the tension of the driving-belt;the cylinder K is driven at a rate proportional to the velocityof the belt-speed, and the cylinder I) is attached to a revo-lution-counter. When the tension of the belt is constant, thenthe revolution of D is proportional to the velocity. Whenthe velocity is constant, the revolution is proportional to thetension of the belt. When both velocity and tension varytogether, then the revolution of D is proportional to the pro-duct of velocity and tension which is the work at any instant, and the number of revolutions of D during any time is pro-portional to the work done during that time, and shows, therefore, how much energy has been transmitted by thedynamometer. In the figures, for the sake of clearness, the frame whichcarries the cylinders is omitted
