Active galaxy Markarian 817, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. This galaxy has intense star formation regions with an active black hole in its core with associated jets of outflowing material. Markarian 817 is 430 million light years distant, in the constellation of Draco. This combined optical and infrared image was obtained on 2 August 2009 by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) as part of the Hubble Servicing Mission 4 Early Release Observations (SM4 ERO).
