Mosaic restoration. Archaeologist working to restore a mosaic. Restoration of mosaics is mostly limited to cleaning and reinforcing the remaining parts, so that the image is visible. Some small pieces of coloured stones are replaced, but most of the damage caused over time is left to preserve the archaeological record. This work is being carried out as part of the Interdepartmental Workshop restoration of mosaics and wall paintings of Saint-Romain-en-Gal, France.
