Bocor-selski, superintendent of the Baush Machine Tool , Mass. It consists of a cast iron blank, with asleeve, upon which are fitted three rings, each of a differentmaterial: bronze, fiber and steel. These sections are held inplace by a key and by three riveted pins, thus forming of thefour materials a practically solid gear blank. An exhaustivetest of one of these gears has been made in a 42-in. Baushboring mill in mesh with a cast iron gear. The desired noise-less quality commonly accomplished by rawhide and similargears was demonstrated, and also the wearing quality, whichwas the inventors chief purpose. ■U4. J., and New York City, reached the end of thefirst stage toward completion on Tuesday, September 11, atwhich time the headings met in the north tube. The headIngs had been advanced continuously from both shores, byshield working, and the point of meeting was near the middleline of the river. An opening through the two shields wasmade in the afternoon of September 11, and on the followingday a celebration party went through. The tunnel is beingbuilt by the ORourke Engineering Construction Company, the contract being made on May 2, 1904. As the distance be-tween shafts is about 6,500 ft., the average rate of advance hasbeen 8 ft. per day, or 4 ft. per day heading. The two tubesare parallel and on the same level throughout.
