German meteorite book. Title page of a German book on meteorites, the title of which translates as 'On the Origin of the Pallas Iron and Others Similar to it, and on Some Associated Natural Phenomena'. This work was by the German physicist Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni (1756-1827). Chaldni's name is at lower right. This edition was published in Riga in 1794. It was in this book that Chladni made the claim that meteorites entered the Earth's atmosphere from outer space. This was contrary to the prevailing volcanic theory of meteorites, but Chladni was proved to be correct in 1803.
