Exterior of North Taku Fort, showing the English Entrance. This is Print 16 in the published catalogue of Beato's China views, where it is titled as above. The caption given beneath the print reads 'The North Fort, showing the line of retreat taken by the remains of the garrison after the capture of the place on the 21st of August 1861.' This caption must refer in fact to print 5 (it is unclear whether the caption was entered incorrectly in the original album, or whether it was accidentally transposed when the album was disbound and the prints remounted). Originally published in 21 August 1860. Illustrated by Felice Beato.
