The 40m span Merchants' Footbridge, from Slate Wharf (right side view) to Catalan Square, is a 3m wide deck suspended by 13 hangers from steel arches. It is part of the Castelfield Heritage Park, turning an industrial canal basin into a tourist attraction with four historic railway viaducts. This part of the Castlefield Canal Basin is known as the Castlefield Junction, where the 1765 Bridgewater Canal from the south-west (left of shot) joins the 1805 trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal from the north-east.
