Distillation apparatus. 16th-century illustration of a Moor's head distillation apparatus (top) placed on top of a furnace (bottom). A wooden casing holds the alembics and water, and in the centre is a copper heating dome. The alembics (caps) receive condensed materials during the distillation, with the distillate running into the receptacles (green). This is a page from 'Liber de arte distillandi de compositis' (1512), published in Strasbourg by German surgeon and alchemist Hieronymus Brunschwig (). This work is a practical manual on chemical, alchemical, and distillation devices, and techniques used to manufacture potions and drugs.
