He was educated at McKendree College, at Lebanon,III., completing his medical education at St. Louis, there having the privilege of specialcourses under the celebrated specialist, Dr. William Niehaus, in opthalmology and auralsurgery, and with Dr. D. B. St. John Roosa of New York. Receiving his diploma in1869 he entered into practice with Dr. Niehaus, but after a year his health failed andhe went to Shreveport, La. Here he practiced for two years, and his health beingimproved he returned to his old practice at St. Louis, remaining there until January 26,1874, when he came to California. After practicing for a year in Los Angeles helocated in Santa Ana, where he soon had a large general practice. Becoming an en-thusiast over the possibilities of citrus culture in this locality, he purchased a tract ofsixty acres on East Seventeenth Street and Tustin Avenue, forty acres of which wasdevoted toorang
