A large statue of voyager and discoverer Captain James Cook RN (Royal Navy) on West Cliff in the historic town of Whitby in North Yorkshire, Britain James Cook discovered Australia and New Zealand as well as some of the smaller islands in the Pacific region in the 17th century. Whitby, a seaside town and small fishing port is on the north Yorkshire coast, facing the North Sea in Britain. Whitby is associated with Royal Navy Captain James Cook, voyager and discoverer of Australia where he learned his seamanship in the harbour, the horror novel of Dracula and the famous Whitby Jet black and alum found in the surrounding cliffs.
