The bright glow is light from hot young stars reflecting off the dust contained in the nebula. M78, around 4 light years across, is one of the brightest reflection nebulae in the night sky. It is located in the constellation of Orion, some 1600 light years from Earth. Image obtained in 2006 by the Mosaic imager on the Mayall 4-metre telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, USA.
