Suffolk South African War Memorial, Bury St Edmunds The memorial commemorates the men of Suffolk who died during the Second Boer War in South Africa, 1899-1902. It is a rectangular stone monument, surmounted by a bronze figure of a bare-headed soldier, sitting on a rock, rifle resting on his right knee, held by his right hand, the soldier looking to his rear. Sculpture by Arthur G Walker RA It bears the inscription VULNERATUS NON VICTUS THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY SUFFOLK PEOPLE AS A MEMORIAL TO SUFFOLK SOLDIERS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899-1902 There is a list of names according to their unit seniority, cavalry, followed by artillery, the Suffolk Regiment, other infantry and volunteers, listed by rank and alphabetically within each group.
