English-French joust in 1381. 15th-century artwork of the joust (a formal deed of arms) between English knight Nicholas Clifford and French squire Jea

English-French joust in 1381. 15th-century artwork of the joust (a formal deed of arms) between English knight Nicholas Clifford and French squire Jean Boucinel. The challenge was made by Boucinel as Clifford travelled on a passport through French territory. A recent tournament held at Vannes in Brittany had followed the English campaign at Nantes where challenges had gone unresolved. This joust, presided over by the Constable of France, Olivier de Clisson, ended in the death of Boucinel. Artwork from the 15th-century French work 'Chronique d'Angleterre' by Jean of Wavrin, a history of England covering the period from 1377 to 1387. This artwork is by the Master of the White Inscriptions.
