Receiving no en-couragement from his father or his church, he was,by the help of a few Lutheran clergymen, enabledto enter Pennsylvania college, Gettysburg, in he remained a year or two, afterward |iur-u-ing his theological course in private. In 1842 hewas licensed to preach by the synod of Virginia,and in 1844 he was ordained to the Lutheran min-istry. After holding pastorates in Virginia andMaryland he was called to St. Johns English Lu-theran church, Philadelphia, in 1858. In 1S74 tin-. necessity for an English Lutheran church in thewestern part of the city led to the establishment ofthe Church of the Holy Communion by membersof St. Johns congregation, and he was at onceelected its beautiful Gothicchurch of greenserpentine marblewas erected on thecorner of Broadand Arch streets,at a cost of $225,-000. It was con-secrated on 17 Feb.,1875, and is one ofthe finest Protest-ant churches inPhiladelphia. is an eloquentpulpit orator. Hisstyle is clear, or-nate, attractive,and forcible. Hepublished his firstwork at the age oftwenty-two years,and has nowattained a wide reputation as an au-thor. His publications number more than a hun-dred, and some of them have been republished inEngland and translated into other languages. Abibliography of his published works (Philadel-phia, 1887) makes a duodecimo volume of fifty-seven pages. He was joint editor of the Luther-an, Philadelphia, in 1860-l, and of the Lutheranan
