Moai monolithic statues Easter Island

From an original Illustrated London News engraving published 1869. This image has been cleaned to remove bleed thru text. The original image can be purchased by searching for FEDAYM. Believed for many years to be just heads recent excavations have shown that they are actually whole body statues that were buried up to their shoulders on the slope of a volcano. In fact the lower bodies have been shown to be covered in tattoos. The crater is named in this illustration as Otuiti crater, but I think that may be a Victorian error. More likely is they are in the Rano Raraku quarry.
