Post-menopausal oviduct. Coloured scanning electr- on micrograph (SEM) of the post-menopausal oviduct (fallopian tube) lining of a 63 year old woman.

Post-menopausal oviduct. Coloured scanning electr- on micrograph (SEM) of the post-menopausal oviduct (fallopian tube) lining of a 63 year old woman. The fallopian tubes are the muscular tubes linking the ovaries to the uterus. At bottom are ciliated cells, whose fine cilia (yellow) beat rhythmically to help propel ova from the ovaries to the uterus. Secretory cells (blue) maintain a moist environment and provide nutrients for the ova. After the menopause, the secretions are reduced and the ciliated cells diminish in number, as no more ova are released. Magnification: x1100 at 6x7cm size.
