Heroes of the Trojan War, 19th-century artwork. Fought between Ancient Greek city states and the city of Troy in Asia Minor, this Bronze Age (12th century BC) war was described in the 'Iliad' by Homer. From left to right are: Menelaus, King of Sparta; Paris, prince of Troy; Diomedes, King of Argos; Odysseus, King of Ithaca; Nestor, King of Pylos; Achilles, King of the Myrmidons and greatest hero of the age; and Agamemnon, King of Mycenae and brother of Menelaus. Achilles was killed at Troy, as was Paris. The war was fought when Menelaus's wife Helen eloped with Paris. Homer's 'Odyssey' tells of Odysseus's voyages after the sack of Troy.
