Desert irrigation, Sudan, infrared satellite image. North is at top. Agricultural fields (red) are possible in this desert region because water is supplied from the reservoir (black, lower right) that has formed behind the Khashm el-Girba Dam (built in 1964), which has dammed the Atbara River. This 180-kilometre-wide image was taken on 16 January 1973, in visible and infrared wavelengths, with the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) sensor on NASA's Landsat 1 satellite.
