Glycogen phosphorylase, molecular model. This is an enzyme involved in breaking down glycogen, the energy storage molecule involved in animal metabolism. The action of glycogen phosphorylase provides fuel for muscle contraction. In the liver this enzyme maintains blood glucose balance. Enzymes are proteins, and this one consists of two polypeptide subunits and 842 amino acids. The atoms are colour-coded here: carbon (green), hydrogen (white), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue), and phosphorus (yellow).
