Onychogryphosis. View of an abnormally thickened and deformed big toenail in an adult. This is known as onychogryphosis, and the cause is unknown, but is associated with poor circulation or with a fungal infection. It is usually seen in elderly people and can affect the fingernails as well as the toenails. The thickening and overgrowth of the nails is said to represent the claws of a mythological beast - the griffin.
