Left corner of a print of the scene of Cebes, Philips Galle, After Frans Floris (I), 1561 - 1596 print Allegory about the salvation road of man. Life as a city with three walled sites, with a temple in the middle. At the outer gate the souls of children are waiting, ready to enter adult life. Before entering, they get something to drink from temptation (seductio), which makes them ignorant. The first walled site shows all kinds of transfers and distractions, such as prejudice (opinion), desire (cupiduas), doubt (error) and ignorance (ignorantia). They prevent the youthful person from penetrating further to the next circle. Only by following the personifications of repentance (Poenitentia), Hope (Spes) and Good desire (Bonnnem Desiderium) can people gain access to the second circle. There he is taught in all forms of worldly knowledge. On the left are the seven Artes Liberales and on the right various scholars debate. Man is put to the test in this circle and confronted with false knowledge (Falsa Disciplina). The mountain can be climbed further with the help of self -control (continents) and patientness (tolerantia). The third walled terrain, finally, is monitored by truth (Veritas). She grants people access to true happiness. He is welcomed by the cardinal virtues and is allowed to stay in the house of the blissful, where true happiness is waiting for him.
