Captain Shepherd was appointed lieutenant-colonelEighteenth Infantry, Ma)- 14, 1861, serving in commandof a battalion of the Third Infantry during May andJune, 1861. He was then on mustering duty in NewYork City to December, 1S61, when he participated inthe Tennessee and Mississippi campaign of the Armyof the Ohio, being engaged in the advance upon and. siege of Corinth, Mississippi, April and Ma)-, 1862, rout-ing a rebel camp May I, 1862, and pursuit to Baldwin,Mississippi, to May 31, 1862. He then participated inMajor-General Buells movement through Alabama andTennessee, to Louisville, Kentucky, from July to Sep-tember, 1862. After serving as a member of a court ofinquiry at Allegheny Arsenal, Pennsylvania, in Octoberand November, he participated in Major-General Rose-cranss Tennessee campaign with the Army of theCumberland, from November, 1862, to April 17, 1863,commanding the brigade of regulars in the battle ofStone River, December 31, 1862. He was brevetted colonel May 17, 1862, for gallantand meritorious conduct at the siege of Corinth, Missis-sippi, and promoted colonel of the Fifteenth Infantry,January 21, 1863, when he was assigned as superintend-ent of Regimental Recruiting Service at Fort Adams,from May 7, 1863, to February 13, 1866.
